My birthday karaoke challenge: Forty by 40

February 1st, 2011  |  music, observed  |  2 Comments

OK, here’s the situation. I turn 40 in a few weeks and feel the need to prove to myself that I still have a little mojo left. So I’m embarking on a personal challenge — to sing 40 karaoke songs between now and the time the clock strikes midnight on my birthday on February 18.

The rules are simple:

  1. No more than 30% of the songs can be ones that I have sung before (this is supposed to be a challenge after all)
  2. No duplicates, a song can only be sung once to count toward the goal
  3. Duets don’t count (Broke this rule on 2/11. Letting it slide. I’ll keep duets to a minimum.)

I’ll be posting details and video of my progress over the next few weeks. You’re invited to join me in person (Facebook event invites are forthcoming) to cheer me on at the following locations:

2/2 - U Otter Stop, Minneapolis (9pm)

2/8 – Grumpy’s, Roseville (10pm)

2/10 – Dixies on Grand, St. Paul (10pm)

2/13 – Vegas Lounge, Minneapolis (9:30pm)

2/15 – Mancini’s Char House, St. Paul (8:30pm)

2/16 – U Otter Stop, Minneapolis (9pm)

2/17 – U Otter Stop, Minneapolis (9pm), Nye’s Polonaise Room, Minneapolis (11pm)

2/18 – Joe & Stan’s Sports Lounge & Grill, St. Paul (9:30pm)

More dates may be added as needed. Follow @techkaraokempls on Twitter or the TechKaraoke Minneapolis group on Facebook for more details.

I’m also taking requests, so feel free to leave yours in the comments. Wish me luck because in the immortal words of AC/DC, “It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll.”

UPDATE – I did it! Song lists and videos: #1-4, #5-9, #10-14, #15-16, #17-21, #22-32, #33-39, #40

In The News: Verdana & 22 Other Typefaces Added to MoMA’s Permanent Collection
I’m really excited about this. The Museum of Modern Art has added a number of digital fonts to its permanent collection.  Included in this first batch is Verdana, designed for Microsoft by Matthew Carter in 1996 and one of the first fonts designed specifically for onscreen use.

The fonts were added to MoMA’s architecture and design collection, which contains work from 1932 to the present. The collection was light on graphic design pieces. Previously, the only other typeface in their collection was Helvetica.

“We realized that graphic design was a lacuna in the collection” said Paola Antonelli, senior curator of architecture and design at MoMA. “Three years ago we held a symposium in New York to discuss it and to identify new categories we should tackle. Typefaces were among them.” Continue reading →

My Twitterview Transcript

Try saying that three times fast. I was the lucky subject of a Twitterview (interview via Twitter) by Joel Carlson earlier this week. You can read the transcript, and see a ginormous photo of me, on his blog.

Thanks again to Joel for the opportunity.

Starbucks "new" logo leaves me cold

January 5th, 2011  |  coffee, design  |  1 Comment

To celebrate their 40th anniversary, Starbucks unveiled today what they are calling their new logo. It’s really a just wordless version of their old logo, with a larger siren now in green. Apparently cropping is now considered logo design. As much as I’m a fan of their coffee, I’m not very impressed with this new mark.

My musical Christmas gift to you – 2010 edition

December 23rd, 2010  |  events, music

I’ve been making holiday mixtapes as gifts for years. They’ve evolved into two distinct themes — that warm and fuzzy feeling the holidays can bring and the darker, more stressful and confused condition that can too easily befall us during this time of year.

No matter which camp you’re in, turn up your speakers and enjoy! I wish you all a restful and safe holiday. Continue reading →

Festive Fonts: A web standards holiday card from Typekit
I love this geeked-out celebration of the season from Typekit. They created this cutting edge virtual card powered by HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and of course, Typekit fonts. The snowing letters are a nice touch. Read more about how they did it.
