I was asked to fill in at the last minute for an ailing presenter at today’s MinneWebCon. It’s one of my favorite local conferences, so the decision was easy. I even got to talk about one of my favorite subjects — web typography.
Thanks to my session participants for making the experience so enjoyable. Congrats to the conference organizers for another great day of thought-provoking speakers. My presentation slide deck is below.

Presentation: “Cure for the Common Font” — A Web Designer’s Introduction to Typeface Selection
Here’s one more reason I wish I was at SXSW this year. This panel made up of Stephen Coles, Frank Chimero, Tiffany Wardle, and Jason Santa Maria lays a solid foundation of some basic principles for making wise type choices. Check out the slides and complete audio of this great session. Continue reading →

Letterpress Poster: Typography Deconstructed
Designed by Drew Binkley, this striking poster is “the result of several months of research both on the subjects of the Anatomy of Type and Type Glossary. Inspired by the craft of letterpress printing and a love for typography, Typography Deconstructed aims at providing a resource for educating those interested in what makes type… well, type. All good things must come to an end. I completed my challenge to sing 40 karaoke songs before I turn forty on schedule on this past Friday at Joe & Stan’s Sports Lounge & Grill in Saint Paul. It was a hell of a ride. So, without further ado, I give you:
#40: Total Eclipse of the Heart (Bonnie Tyler)
I didn’t want to mess around with something I had never sung for such a milestone. I toyed with Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing (an overdone, yet iconic piece I love to rock the hell out of every so often) but figured it would be too predictable. I needed something epic to finish the challenge. Maybe with a touch of drama as well. There could be no other choice than this timeless classic. As the lady says, “forever’s gonna start tonight.”
I want to thank too many folks to mention for all the support and encouragement. I definitely didn’t feel like I undertook this challenge alone. Rock on!
