Adele McAlear wrote a great post this week about ICANN’s decision to remove restrictions on top level domains (TLDs). Essentially this means that .com and .net could soon be replaced by .anything and .everything. This started me thinking about how I have been using web addresses/URLs lately. I was probably ten or eleven years old when I first heard George Carlin. I was digging through the comedy bin in my local record store and something about his album cover for Class Clown caught my attention. I got a few minutes into it before leaping across the room and plugging my giant padded headphones in. I spent the rest of the next hour in front of my stereo (the cord wasn’t very long) with tears streaming down my face from laughter. I’ve have a longstanding love affair with mixtapes. I’ve written about this in a little more detail in my review of Muxtape. So you can imagine my excitement when I learned about the new online mixtape site on the block, Mixwit.
There are some significant differences between Mixwit and Muxtape. Users can create multiple mixes, there’s no song number cap and the mixes play in a clever little animated cassette tape player. There’s also a smart search (by user, artist, song andmix title), simple three-step wizard to create mixes and great shareability (one click add to social networks or an embed code). It took a while, but Spring has finally come to Minnesota. So, squinting in the sunlight and gasping the fresh air pouring through newly opened widows, my thoughts turned to cleaning, de-cluttering and purging all the stuff that has piled up around here. Then I started to think about the state of my social networks (of course). After all, the potential audience exposed to my garage is fairly small compared to my varied online nooks and crannies. It’s also more fun to blog about this than organize my closets.
