When Good People Pick Bad Fonts – My Ignite Presentation Video

May 1st, 2009  |  best of, design, events, typography  |  6 Comments

My contribution for the first ever Ignite Minneapolis. Thanks to videographer Brian Stemmler for making me look good.

The Ignite challenge: Any topic, 20 slides, 15 seconds per slide, 5 minutes total.  This was so much fun. It helped to be talking about a subject I’m passionate about. Remember, friends don’t let friends use bad fonts.

If you’re interested, you can find my presentation slides here. I’ve also set up a Flickr group of the same name to collect even more great photos of bad fonts in action.

I love the “Jesus wouldn’t use this font” line.. while most of those fonts are on the scary retched side.. I can see how there might be instances for, well a couple of them anyway, that might be appropriate… or, maybe I’m just temperamentally ill-disposed to absolutes?

Thanks! I actually am in complete agreement with you. Most of these fonts aren’t “bad” in and of themselves, just misused. I do stumble upon appropriate use now and then. Although it’s getting more rare. Besides, absolutes are just funnier, don’t you think?

Very funny, Mykl! I wish that recent movie about Helvetica (yes, I actually rented it) was as interesting as your presentation.

Thanks, Bryan. Helvetica is still on my list to watch. I’m guessing it wasn’t a laugh riot then?

I am always learning from you. So many highlights here, I think my current favorite is “Now sadly this phenomenon is on the move, expanding across the country like a virus. A spindly, unbalanced, sarcastically casual virus.” I need that on a coffee mug. Really well prepared and presented.

But Comic Sans gives that personal “I care about you” touch to “Bridge Out Ahead”, don’t you think?

Look at it this way: as long as there are people making horrible design decisions it just validates the good stuff all the more.
